3 Tips For Successful Co-Parenting

We have assisted a number of families to smoothly transition into post-divorce life. Below are three tips to ease your family into co-parenting:

  1. Avoid criticizing your ex-spouse. Your kids are always listening, and they are internalizing what they hear. If you and your ex-spouse have a serious dispute, both parents need to make a concerted effort to not speak poorly of each other if the kids are present.
  2. Maintain a consistent schedule. Co-parenting issues arise whenever parents fail to adhere to their custody and visitation schedules. Maintaining a consistent schedule helps your children adjust to their new reality, and helps you stay out of court. Some conflicts are unavoidable, but you should make an effort to adhere to your agreement. If you foresee a problem, immediately communicate the concern with your ex-spouse. If schedule conflicts become a regular issue, you may need to discuss the possibility of a custody modification with your attorney.
  3. Maintain a civil relationship. It can be difficult to depersonalize interactions with your ex-spouse after years of an intimate relationship, but an air of professionalism can benefit all parties. Avoid arguing over minor details in your child’s life that do not matter in the long run. Developing a civil relationship decreases your stress and provides your child with a more stable home environment.
