How do you know it’s the right time to divorce?

On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2021 | Divorce

Your marriage is important to you, but you know that it isn’t exactly how it should be. What you’ve been trying to decide is if you should look into a divorce or if it’s reasonable to want to try to stay with your spouse and make your marriage work.

There are some signs that it is past time to divorce, but these don’t necessarily mean that you need to immediately jump into a divorce. You may decide instead to try counseling or couple’s therapy. If those don’t work, then you may look into divorce to help you move on.

4 important signs that it’s time to divorce

There are a few signs that mean it’s more than likely time to divorce. Here are four that you may have already run into:

  • Your needs aren’t being met despite telling your spouse that you have needs that you’d like to have fulfilled
  • You’re a victim of abuse. Whether physical, verbal or financial, abuse is a sure sign that your marriage should end
  • You have settled on the idea that your marriage is easier than getting a divorce despite not being invested in it
  • You don’t trust or respect your spouse

These are all signs that your marriage is in trouble or that your relationship has long ended despite still being together. You should know that when your emotional or physical needs aren’t met, you are just staying in your marriage for convenience or that you don’t trust your spouse. If any abuse is present, then that’s the largest red flag that you should walk away from your marriage.

Staying together because it’s easy isn’t always the better choice

It is sometimes easier to stay together despite not being happy, but the easier choice isn’t necessarily the better one. If you’re concerned about losing too many assets or not being able to support yourself, you may want to learn more about spousal support and the state laws regarding the division of your property before you decide to put up with an unhappy situation. You can fight for a fair settlement, which may help you move on more easily.
